The city of Brookhaven is nestled in metro Atlanta’s northeastern suburbs, within the western portion of DeKalb County. The city is the county’s largest, encompassing over 12 square miles and home to a population of about 50,000 permanent residents. The city is located about five miles from downtown Atlanta.
Brookhaven was the site of major commercial and residential development between the 1950s and 1970s, which resulted in its significant expansion by the time the 80s rolled around. Plans of incorporating it as a city were first started in 2007, after the local community sought more control over the area regarding land use, planning, zoning, parks and recreation, and police and fire protection (issues regarding these factors were decided in Decatur). It was officially declared a city in 2012.
